Our Story
Chilcomb Valley is a family-run vineyard located on the South Downs in the heart of Hampshire. We pride ourselves on being a small artisanal producer of high quality English sparkling wine, with a focus on creating the most interesting wines we can rather than necessarily seeking a 'house style' as many bigger vineyards will try to. Our style is one of quality and interest.
The vineyard is located on the Hampshire chalk downs near Winchester, which has exactly the same chalk substrate as that found in the finest vineyards in Champagne, and English wines have demonstrated they are more than a match for the classic French region over the past decade.
From grape to glass, we take a vested interest in the full lifecycle of each year's production. We tend to the vines through the often turbulent English seasons, bring the family together for the annual picking and spend a great deal spend time curating the perfect cuvées with each production until we are truly content with the end product.
Simply put, we care and take pride in wines we create and how they are produced.
The project started in 2016 when the family planted 1.1 hectares to 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Chardonnay on a shallow-chalk field that demonstrated perfect growing conditions. Since then we have had increasingly successful harvests in 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2023; the latter of which produced a mammoth 14 tonnes of exceptionally high quality fruit, which was our biggest harvest by a remarkable 100% on the previous year.
From these vintages, our wines have been meticulously hand-crafted and developed by the family. We also run and manage the vineyard ourselves. When combined, these two things ensure we are able to cultivate and create our own unique flavour and style of wine, whilst continuing to maximise the full potential of each vintage produced.
Did you know?: Our bottle logo features the horseshoe vetch flower which is a native of the South Downs Area of Outstanding National Beauty (AONB), and exclusive food of Britain's rarest blue butterfly, the Adonis Blue and its caterpillars.
